WEST CHESTER - Senator Andy Dinniman announced today that he will hold a special seminar to discuss the Governor’s Energy Independence Strategy and talk about the upcoming special legislative session on energy.
“A Discussion on Pennsylvania’s Energy Future” is set for Saturday, Sept. 8, at Great Valley High School. The event will include roundtable discussions on the economics of the governor’s plan, on its alternative-fuels and energy-conservation components, and on Pennsylvania and greenhouse gasses.
The seminar, which is free and open to the public, will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Coffee and snacks will be provided.
The Sept. 8 event kicks off Senator Dinniman’s Fall Action Plan on Energy. Residents will be invited to continue their discussion after the event via a blog on Senator Dinniman’s Web site, www.senatordinniman.com. The Fall Action Plan will conclude with a town-hall style meeting to be held after the special session closes.
“I’m holding several discussions on this issue because it is so vitally important - energy affects everything we do,” Dinniman said on Monday. “Energy policy affects us at the gas pump. It affects our environment and the world we will leave our children and grandchildren. How we address energy issues will have a big impact on Pennsylvania’s economy and on job creation here in the commonwealth.”
“I want to discuss all these issues with constituents before the special legislative session begins on Monday, Sept. 17,” Dinniman said. “I want to talk about the energy-policy proposals already on the table, about some of the matters that may come up during the special session, and about what we want and don’t want in Pennsylvania’s Energy Independence Policy.”
Dinniman said several state and local experts will lead the roundtable discussions.
Daniel Desmond, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Energy and Technology Deployment, will lead a discussion titled, “The Big Question: How Should Pennsylvania Pay for Energy Independence”?
Roger Clark, manager for technology and policy at the The Reinvestment Fund, will talk about Pennsylvania’s role in energy conservation in a discussion titled, “Energy Conservation - Taking the ‘Load’ Off Pennsylvania’s Power Companies and Ratepayers.”
Alternative fuels will be the focus of Tom Tuffey’s discussion, titled, “The PennSecurity Fuels Initiative: An Alternative to All Oil, All the Time.” Tuffey is director of the PennFuture Center for Energy, Enterprise and the Environment.
Joy Bergey, project director for the Pennsylvania Interfaith Climate Change Campaign, will lead a discussion titled, “Protecting Our Air, Our Climate, Our Future: What is the Next Step?”
Attendees will be asked to sign up for a particular discussion when they register.
“I’m looking forward to the Sept. 8 event and to discussing energy issues throughout the fall,” Dinniman said. “We need to come up with solutions that work for Pennsylvania not only today but for the years and decades ahead. The better informed we are as we go through this process, the better off we will be. That’s what these events are all about.”
