WEST CHESTER, AUG. 3, 2007 - State Sen. Andy Dinniman today urged consumers who signed up for the state’s Do Not Call list in 2002 to renew their registration.
“This law is just as popular and important today as it was when it was first enacted five years ago,” Dinniman said. “But to continue to avoid unwanted telemarketing calls, those who first signed up in 2002 must re-register for this free service.”
The Pennsylvania Do Not Call law, gives telephone subscribers the opportunity to avoid unwanted marketing calls, but is valid for only five years from the date of initial registration.
Individuals who registered in 2002 must re-register by Sept. 15, or their number will be dropped from the Do Not Call registry on Nov. 1. Re-registration keeps the list as current as possible because people move and telephone numbers change.
Telemarketers who violate the law face fines and penalties. The law also prohibits telemarketers from blocking their phone numbers from a person’s caller identification device.
Those exempt from the law include tax-exempt charitable organizations and veterans’ organizations chartered by the U.S. Congress.
One million Pennsylvanians registered for the Do Not Call list during the first two weeks after the law was enacted. Over the last five years, millions more have added their numbers to the list.
To re-register up to seven residential and cellular numbers per person, visit the attorney general’s Web site www.attorneygeneral.gov; call 1-888-777-3406; or mail a name, mailing address, phone number and signature to the Attorney General’s Office, Strawberry Square, Harrisburg, PA 17120.
Consumers who do not recall when they first signed up can re-register for another five years. The Web site also allows people to verify when they first registered for the list.
