WEST CHESTER, SEPT. 28, 2007 - State Sen. Andy Dinniman announced that this year’s expansion of the Classrooms for the Future program will bring millions in technology funding to four local school districts.

The West Chester Area School District received one of the largest grants in the state at $1,290,069. The Downingtown Area School District also received significant funding with a $1,088,770 grant. The Coatesville Area School District received $387,676 and the Owen J. Roberts School District received $33,633.

The grants will be used to bring computer technology to Pennsylvania high school classrooms. This is West Chester Area School District’s second year of participation in program. The Downingtown, Coatesville and Owen J. Roberts districts were among 255 districts statewide that were added this year.

“By integrating these tools in the classrooms, we are preparing teenagers with the skills they will undoubtedly need to advance their education and professional careers,” Dinniman said.

Gov. Ed Rendell’s Classrooms for the Future is a three-year investment to provide laptop computers, high-speed Internet access and state-of-the-art software to Pennsylvania high school math, science, social studies and English classrooms. Thanks to the latest round in state funding, now 358 high schools across the state are participating in this innovative program. Under the governor’s plan, every high school would participate by 2009.

“Technology is constantly evolving. Incorporating cutting-edge technology into our schools enhances the learning environment and prepares students for the future,” Dinniman said. “As an educator, I applaud this initiative and will work to see the number of participating school districts increased.”
