The Pennsylvania Senate has unanimously approved State Senator Andy Dinniman’s legislation conveying 96 acres of former Pennhurst State Hospital property to East Vincent Township.
Senate Bill 568 was approved on Tuesday and now goes to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for its approval and ultimately to Gov. Ed Rendell for his signature.
Senator Dinniman said East Vincent plans to use the land for a park with both active and passive recreation, including walking trails and multi-purpose fields. Township Supervisor Chris McNeil said the township will create a master plan for the exact design of the park.
She said the park resulting from Senator Dinniman’s legislation will provide “the many people who live in the area a tremendous opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and have a marvelous walk in nature.”
As part of the agreement, East Vincent has agreed to maintain the cemetery that served residents of the former Pennhurst State Hospital.
The 96 acres include 80 acres of open space and 16 acres of Pennsylvania Southeastern Veterans Center facilities that are to be replaced as part of the center’s planned renovation.
