WEST CHESTER (February 23) – State Senator Andy Dinniman recently visited Sankofa Academy, an Afrocentric charter school located in West Chester, in honor of Black History Month.

Dinniman spoke with students about the history of the civil rights movement and its ties to the local area, as well as about how the Pennsylvania legislature works and the importance of civic involvement.

“Knowledge is power and that is why it is so important that you use your knowledge to affect change in the world,” Dinniman said. “If you don’t get involved someone else is going to determine your future – someone whose interests may not be the same as yours.”

Sankofa Academy is a free, public charter school with a focus on Africa in terms of subject matter and teaching methods. The academy was founded in 2005 and currently serves about 30 students in grades six through 10 from throughout the region.
