When Harvey Rottman suffered a sudden heart attack one early January morning, his wife, Pauline, a former Honey Brook Ambulance EMT, immediately knew what to do: call 9-1-1.

Honey Brook Ambulance and Medic 9 units responded quickly to rush Harvey to Lancaster General Hospital. During the trip he went into cardiac arrest, but EMT’s and a paramedic successfully revived him and saved his life.

State Senator Andy Dinniman recently honored Honey Book Ambulance EMTs, Vincent Pasquarella and Judy Stoltzfus and Medic 9 Paramedic Jason Matter for their bravery and quick-thinking in the early morning hours of January 26, 2009.

“I thank all of our local emergency responders for their hard work, service and dedication. Remember, there really are heroes living right next door, and it’s important that we recognize them,” Dinniman said.

Harvey, a retired contractor, later underwent successful quadruple bypass surgery and is making a full recovery. Pauline, a staff member of Senator Dinniman’s District Office, said she is forever grateful to all of the emergency responders, doctors and nurses who helped save Harvey’s life.

“As a former EMT, I know the pressures and responsibilities involved on a daily basis, and this crew did an exceptional job,” Pauline said. “Harvey and I spent our 45th Wedding Anniversary in the intensive care unit, but at least we were together. They have given my husband a longer, healthier life and many years of happiness with our family.”
