State Senator Andy Dinniman recently announced that residents who have applied for property tax or rent rebates can now check the status of their claims online thanks to a new state Web site.

The Department of Revenue’s new Web site, www.papropertytaxrelief.com, allows applicants to check their rebate status as soon as six weeks after submitting their applications.

“In these difficult economic times, these rebates can go a long way in easing the burden of property taxes for those in need,” Dinniman said. “I encourage applicants to use this Internet resource in order to track their claims and take full advantage of Pennsylvania’s Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program.”

Applicants can check the status of their rebates by visiting www.papropertytaxrelief.com and entering their Social Security number, anticipated rebate amount and date of birth. The Web site will provide claim status confirmation, the actual amount of the rebate and the date the rebate is expected to be mailed or direct-deposited.

Applicants can also use an automated phone service to check their rebate status by calling, toll-free, 1-888-PATAXES.

The Pennsylvania Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program provides property tax relief for senior citizens, widows and widowers over 50 years old, and disabled adults. The funds are available for households that make up to $35,000 per year. Applicants may also exempt half of their Social Security when calculating their total income.

This vital program, financed by the Pennsylvania lottery, provides a maximum rebate of $650 to eligible applicants. A rebate of up to $650 is available for renters who make up to $15,000.

“I urge all eligible applicants to apply as soon as possible. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2009,” Dinniman said.

Rebate checks will be distributed by the Department of Revenue beginning on July 1, 2009.
