WEST CHESTER (April 30) - State Senator Andy Dinniman recently presented a $350,000 Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant to The Hickman Senior Living Community for the construction of its new wing, the Mary Taylor House.
“It is important that we continue to expand affordable housing options for senior citizens in Chester County,” Dinniman said. “This is a great project and it’s good to see construction moving forward so quickly. I always enjoy visiting residents at The Hickman and I look forward to the opening of the Mary Taylor House.”
“Without this grant, our efforts to expand the mission of The Hickman to the Mary Taylor House at the former site of the County's Hazlett Building would not have been possible,” Robert Adams, chairman of the Hickman’s Board of Managers, said. “We are very excited at the prospect of adding new and affordable residential housing here in the heart of the Borough for our senior citizens. Senator Dinniman has been in the forefront in supporting our mission and building plans, and his efforts in Harrisburg on behalf of The Hickman are most appreciated.”
The Mary Taylor House, located across East Biddle Street from The Hickman, will feature 60 affordable housing units for senior citizens and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The new three-and-a-half story 61,340 square-foot building will offer an array of services, activities and educational and cultural programs for residents. In addition, it will be physically connected with the existing facility via a pedestrian bridge over the roadway.
The Mary Taylor House will be an environmentally friendly building, qualifying it for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. It will also feature one of Chester County’s first living sedum “green” roofs
Dinniman secured the grant through his leadership in the Senate and the project was approved by the legislature as part of the 2009 budget. RACP, funded by bonds issued by the state every three to four years, is administered by the Office of the Budget to support major regional, economic, cultural, civic and historical improvement projects.
