HARRISBURG (February 12) - The Pennsylvania Senate recently passed legislation that officially renames Phoenixville’s Gay Street Bridge, Veterans Memorial Gay Street Bridge.

State Senator Andy Dinniman, who worked for the name change in the legislature, said it would be a fitting tribute to the many local veterans who have answered our nation’s call of duty.

“Our veterans will forever hold a cherished place in the history of our country and the hearts of all Americans. And in Phoenixville, Veterans Memorial Gay Street Bridge will serve as a constant reminder of the local heroes whose courage and sacrifice have secured our freedoms and defended our way of life,” Dinniman said.

Dinniman was the driving force in expediting the replacement of the bridge, which crossed the French Creek on Route 113. The new bridge opened in October, several months ahead of schedule.

“Veterans Memorial Gay Street Bridge is not only a vital artery to Phoenixville’s downtown business district, but it’s also already a local landmark,” Dinniman said. “The wide sidewalks and shoulders cater to pedestrians and bicyclists, while the giant steel arches evoke the region’s industrial heritage.”

The bill, which passed the Senate unanimously, will now go the governor, who is expected to sign it into law.
