WEST CHESTER (February 25) - State Senator Andy Dinniman announced that state grants are now available to support children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and their families.

“These grants can go a long way in helping autistic individuals and their families support important programs and services. I know that many families will use them to help pay for summer activities like swimming lessons and camp programs,” Dinniman said. “I encourage all eligible applicants to apply. Remember, the deadline for applications is April 16.”

The mini-grants, which come through the Bureau of Autism Services of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, are only offered for a limited time. Eligible applicants may apply for up to $500 in grant funds. However, total funding is limited and the grants will be awarded on a first come, first served basis, with priority given to those who have not received funding in previous years.

Dinniman said grant information and eligibility requirements can be found at www.autisminpa.org.

The grants can be used for the following programs and activities occurring between March 1, 2010, and August 31, 2010:

  • Respite or child care (services may be informal, such as a private babysitter and do not need to be through an agency);
  • Summer camp programs;
  • Autism or advocacy related conferences, workshops, training opportunities;
  • Community programs, such as karate lessons, sports lessons, dance classes, art classes and similar activities; and
  • Modifications or adaptations for the home for safety purposes.

Applications are available at Dinniman’s West Chester District Office located at One North Church Street, or by calling 1-866-539-7689, or e-mailing DPW-AutismOffice@state.pa.us. Applications are also available online visit www.autisminpa.org.

The deadline for applications is April 16, 2010. Applicants will begin being notified of awards on May 14, 2010.
