Deadline Extended for Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program
WEST CHESTER (June 16) – State Senator Andy Dinniman has announced that the deadline to apply for the Property Tax or Rent Rebate Program for older adults and residents with disabilities has been extended from June 30 to Dec. 31.
“Every year this program helps 600,000 older Pennsylvanians. Still, every year thousands of Pennsylvanians who qualify for assistance through this program never apply even though these funds can go a long way in easing the burden of property taxes for those in need,” Dinniman said. “I hope that by extending this deadline, all eligible residents have a chance to apply for relief.”
The Pennsylvania Property Tax or Rent Rebate Program provides property tax relief for senior citizens, widows and widowers over 50 years old, and disabled adults. The funds are available for households that make up to $35,000 per year. Applicants may also exempt half of their Social Security when calculating their total income.
This vital program, financed by the Pennsylvania Lottery, provides a maximum rebate of $650 to eligible applicants. Some eligible homeowners can qualify for as much as $975 through supplemental rebates that are automatically calculated by the state and given to homeowners whose total household income is less than $30,000 and whose property taxes comprise at least 15 percent of their total household income.
“Every eligible applicant should take advantage of this important program,” Dinniman said. “If you think you may be eligible, I urge you to contact my district office. We will answer any questions you may have and assist you in completing an application.”
Rebate checks will be distributed by the Department of Revenue on July 1, 2014. Those who have already applied can track the status of their rebates online at www.revenue.state.pa.us or by calling, toll-free, 1-888-PATAXES.
Since the Property Tax or Rent Rebate’s 1971 inception, more than $5.6 billion has been paid to eligible older adults and residents with disabilities.
