WEST CHESTER (May 15, 2019) – Thirteen schools in Chester County – eight in the Coatesville Area School District and five in the Owen J. Roberts School District – will receive more than $57,000 in total state funding for school breakfast programs, state Senator Andy Dinniman announced today.

“Every child deserves the chance to be educated to the top of their ability and if they’re hungry, tired, or low on energy, they can’t do that,” said Dinniman, who serves as minority chair of the Senate Education Committee. “There’s a reason why breakfast is called the ‘most important meal of the day.’ These grants will ensure students and young people have access to the healthy and nutritious options they need to be ready to learn when they enter the classroom.”

The funds, which come through the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s School Breakfast Mini-Grant Program, are as follows:

  • $4,162 for Coatesville Area Senior High School
  • $4,162 for the Coatesville Area Intermediate High School
  • $4,162 for North Brandywine Middle School
  • $4,162 for Scott Middle School
  • $4,162 for East Fallowfield Elementary School
  • $4,162 for Kings Highway Elementary School
  • $4,162 for Caln Elementary School
  • $4,162 for Rainbow Elementary School
  • $4,162 for Reeceville Elementary School
  • $5,000 for Owen J. Roberts High School
  • $5,000 for East Vincent Elementary School
  • $5,000 for East Coventry Elementary School
  • $5,000 for North Coventry Elementary School

The grants come as part of $592,000 awarded to 151 schools across the commonwealth.

Under the program, now in its second year, schools can utilize these grants to implement a breakfast program using an “alternative serving method,” like grab-and-go, or breakfast in the classroom.  Schools can also expand an existing program to include an alternative serving method. Breakfast must be made available to all students in a school.
