HARRISBURG (April 24, 2017) – State Senator Andy Dinniman today announced that $582,000 in total state funding has been approved for two major rail freight projects at the Arcelor Mittal steel plant in Coatesville.

“Investments in our rail freight network help stimulate economic development and job growth,” Dinniman said. “In addition, improving and updating our rail infrastructure enhances safety on our local roads and highways by easing traffic congestions.”

The projects, which are funded through PennDOT’s Rail Freight Assistance Program (RFAP), were approved today by the State Transportation Commission. They are as follows:

  • $274,179 for Arcelor Mittal Plate LLC to replace seven turnouts and reconstruct 327 feet of track throughout the company’s Coatesville steel plant.
  • $308,315 for Mittal Steel USA Railways to construct 790 feet of track and replace six turnouts throughout the company’s Coatesville property.

RFAP is an annual grant program that provides financial assistance for investment in rail freight infrastructure. It is underwritten through the new Multi-Modal Fund, created by Act 89 of 2013.

The Coatesville projects are part of 34 rail projects statewide that were approved for more than $40 million in total funding and are expected to support 375 jobs across the Commonwealth.
