WEST CHESTER (May 9, 2018) – State Senator Andy Dinniman announced today that the Chester County Intermediate Unit was awarded $17,500 in state funding to purchase new food service equipment to prepare healthy meals for students.

The funding, which comes through the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Food Service Grant Program, will be used to purchase a combi-oven/steamer.

“An important part of preparing young people for the future is teaching them the importance of developing healthy eating habits and making nutritious meal choices,” Dinniman, who serves as minority chair of the Senate Education Committee, said. “This grant program supports those efforts by helping schools acquire equipment to enhance and expand the variety fresh meals available to students.”

The grants allow School Food Authorities to purchase equipment to serve healthier meals that meet the updated meal patterns, with emphasis on more fruits and vegetable in school meals, improved food safety, and to expand access to food.
