COATESVILLE (April 2) – State Senator Andy Dinniman recently worked with PennDOT to bring together Coatesville residents and transportation officials to look at examples of how the upcoming redevelopment of the city’s train station could benefit the larger community.

Dinniman met with PennDOT officials and the leaders of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Coatesville, including Pastor David Davis, to discuss how the church, which is located adjacent to the proposed entrance of the new train station, could collaborate on addressing parking issues.

The group visited the Mount Joy Train Station where PennDOT provided funds to repave and improve the parking lots of two nearby churches in order to provide overflow parking for rail riders during peak times. The parking lot improvements included landscaping, lighting and shelter.“This is a model of how transportation redevelopment and urban revitalization can work hand-in-hand,” Dinniman said. “Train passengers have access to additional parking during the weekday rush hour and churchgoers get a new and improved parking lot for Sunday morning worship and other activities.”

Dinniman is leading the effort to engage Coatesville residents and community members in the redevelopment of the train station and the revitalization of their city. He also arranged for PennDOT officials overseeing the development of the new train station to meet with local residents to hear their views and hopes for future revitalization and transportation projects in the city.

“Successful redevelopment is about more than building buildings. It is about building a community.  It requires cooperation and partnership between community members and developers. There is no reason why it shouldn’t be a win-win for everybody,” Dinniman said. “What we saw at Mount Joy was a prime example of that.”
