Dinniman to Honor the 97th Civil War Regiment
WEST CHESTER (October 3) – State Senator Andy Dinniman will hold a special event to honor the soldiers of the 97th Civil War Infantry on Sunday, October 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marshall Square Park in West Chester.
Formed in West Chester in 1861, the 97th participated in numerous battles along the southern Atlantic coast through virtually the entire length of the Civil War. It was a pivotal part of the Union effort to blockade and capture Southern ports in order to deprive Confederate states’ trade and supplies. As a result of that service, courage and sacrifice, five of its members received the Medal of Honor.
Sunday’s event, which Senator Dinniman is hosting in conjunction with West Chester Borough’s Department of Parks and Recreation, will feature reenactment activities by the 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and the Sons of the Union Veterans. There will be tables of historical
memorabilia and educational opportunities, a Civil War encampment, a drilling session and a memorial ceremony with guest speakers.
The event will offer an excellent opportunity to learn about the bravery, heroism and sacrifice of the soldiers of the 97th Infantry and to honor all those who continue to serve our nation. For more information on the 97th Regiment, read Senator Dinniman’s guest column here.
It is free and open to the public. The event will be held rain or shine.
