Dear Friend,

Senator Dinniman and HenryAs an advocate for animals, you may be interested to know about my bill to allow therapy dogs and their handlers on public transportation.

Therapy dogs are often used in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools to provide comfort and affection. But where state law allows guide dogs and service dogs on public trains and buses, it does not extend that same right to therapy dogs.

Handlers of therapy dogs tell me this ban is particularly burdensome and decreases the use of therapy dogs in cities where public transit is so convenient.

My Senate Bill 862 would end the ban and allow therapy dogs and their handlers on public transportation. On June 11, the Senate State Government committee unanimously passed the bill in an 11-0 vote.

Now, I need your help in getting this bill passed before the summer recess. Please contact Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi and Senator Jake Corman, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and ask them to call Senate Bill 862 for a floor vote.

You can reach them at:

Senator Jake Corman

Enclosed you will find sample letters that can be sent to Senators Pileggi and Corman. In addition, please consider sending your own personal letter to the senators and placing calls to their respective offices to urge a vote on Senate Bill 862.

If you have any questions about the legislation or require additional assistance, please feel free to call my legislative director, Martin Indars, at 610-692-2112.
