I know you are a supporter of veterans and veterans’ issues. I need your help in protecting the integrity of the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military honor, from those who falsely claim to be recipients of it.

This session I have introduced two bills, Senate Bills 883 and 886, which I call the “Stolen Valor Act.”

Senate Bill 883 makes it illegal for one to falsely claim to be a Medal of Honor recipient if the person making the claim receives a financial benefit or if the person relying on its accuracy suffers a financial detriment.

Senate Bill 886 calls upon the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to provide access to a database of Medal of Honor recipients. In addition, within a year the Department would provide access to an even broader database of all military awards under my bill.

I introduced these bills at the request of retired Maj. Gen. James E. Livingston and other Medal of Honor recipients, whom I met through our joint efforts to restore and save from development the Medal of Honor Grove – the nation’s oldest memorial dedicated to Medal of Honor recipients – located in Schuylkill Township. Recently, both bills were unanimously approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Now, I need your help in getting these bills passed before the summer recess. Please contact Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi and Senator Jake Corman, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and ask them to call Senate Bills 883 and 886 for a floor vote.

You can reach them at:

Enclosed you will find sample letters that can be sent to Senators Pileggi and Corman. In addition, please consider sending your own personal letter to the senators and placing calls to their respective offices to urge a vote on Senate Bills 883 and 886.

If you have any questions about the legislation or require additional assistance, please feel free to call my legislative director, Martin Indars, at 610-692-2112.

Thank you for your commitment to our veterans and your efforts in getting the Stolen Valor Act passed.

Sincerely,

Andy Dinniman
