Dear Friend,

Aidan Joseph Silva
Aidan Joseph Silva

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Each year it claims the lives of thousands of children. One of them was Aidan Silva – a bright, happy and healthy seven-year-old from our area who tragically passed away from Sudden Cardiac Arrest in September 2010.

I have a bill in the Senate that aims to reduce the number of young lives lost to this sudden and unexplained condition. Under Senate Bill 606, also known as “Aidan’s Law,” the Commonwealth would use its purchasing power to provide free automated external defibrillators (AED’s) for poorer school districts and subsidized AED’s to other school districts and private schools without them.

AED’s drastically increase the chances of survival for children and adults who suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest. For each minute that passes after a person suffers Sudden Cardiac Arrest, the chance of survival without the use of an AED decreases by ten percent. Just in the last twelve months, three high school students in Chester County survived a Sudden Cardiac Arrest because their school had an AED and used it successfully.

Aidan’s Law would help ensure every public school in Pennsylvania has an AED that is maintained, updated, and readily available to occupants of the building. On June 11, the Senate Education Committee unanimously passed the bill in an 11-0 vote.

Now, I need your help in getting this bill passed before the summer recess. Please contact Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi and Senator Jake Corman, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and ask them to call Senate Bill 606 for a floor vote.
