Phorid Fly Resources

Senator Andy Dinniman continues to work with residents, researchers and community leaders to resolve the infestation of phorid flies that has created a significant hardship on communities in southern Chester County.

Recently, Dinniman organized a town hall meeting in New Garden Township to provide information and hear from almost 200 Chester County citizens regarding how this fly has negatively impacted their lives.  This meeting has prompted swift action from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) who pledged resources and leadership in rooting out and eliminating this pest.

“While I am pleased that the Department of Agricilture has realized the significant impact this fly has had on citizen’s lives, I pledge to remain focused on working with the community to remove the phorid fly from Chester County homes,” Dinniman said.  “With that in mind, I have established this resource page to provide periodic updates on the status of our investigation into a solution.”

In addition, we encourage you to share your experiences about what works and what doesn’t in combating the flies. Throughout this process, Penn State researchers have welcomed firsthand experiences to identify an effective method of deterrence.  More than once, examples provided by the public have aided researchers and I encourage you to share your experiences. Please use the contact form at the bottom of this page.

“Here in Chester County, we pride ourselves on enjoying a high quality of life that provides a unique balance between rural traditions and smart growth policies. I am committed to working with you to eliminate this problem,” Dinniman said. “Please communicate with me through the contact section below with your experiences with the phorid fly.  Any information you provide with be shared with researchers and department officials working toward a solution.”
